A burial vault is a lined and sealed outer receptacle that encloses the casket. It protects the casket from the weight of the earth and from heavy cemetery equipment that passes over the grave. From heavy graveside equipment to extreme impact loads such as the force from lowering the backhoe bucket on or near a grave, a burial vault will protect the casket and your families’ loved ones inside. It also helps resist the entrance of exterior elements into the burial receptacle and preserves the casket, and therefore, your loved one inside. It also preserves the beauty of the cemetery or memorial park by preventing the ground from settling.
If your outer burial container is not lined AND sealed, and it doesn’t withstand at least 5,000 psi on a center load test, it is not a burial vault. Grave liners and minimum sealer containers are available, but are only designed to protect and maintain the grounds of the cemetery; they ARE NOT designed to protect the casket or your loved one from exterior elements.
Water WILL pass through concrete, as it is a porous material. Without the protection of a plastic and/or metal liner, water commonly passes through concrete to the inside of the outer burial container. A common misconception among funeral professionals, and therefore, the families they serve, is that the asphalt coating and the seal on an outer burial container are designed to protect the casket inside. Unfortunately, what they do not understand is that the asphalt coating is designed to keep water INSIDE the walls of the outer burial container, as water actually strengthens concrete. Additionally, the seal on an outer burial container is not designed to keep exterior elements from reaching the casket inside; when sealed, water will still pass through the concrete and reach the casket. The only way to ensure the best and most lasting protection is the purchase of a BURIAL VAULT that is LINED and SEALED.
There are several levels of protection offered when choosing an outer burial container. Every family is different, and each will have a unique set of circumstances, beliefs, and constraints when deciding which type of burial container to purchase. At Ohio Vault Works, Inc., we believe educating the consumer is key and that it is extremely important to convey everything that is available in an easygoing way. In no way do we believe a funeral professional should be looked upon as a salesman. We pride ourselves in offering a wide array of products with varying levels of protection, so each and every one of your families will walk away feeling satisfied with their selection.
